Why should I have an eye test?

It’s important to look after your eyes, as they play a vital role throughout your life. Having an eye test checks how clearly you can see, whether you need any extra support with your long or short vision, and how healthy your eyes are.

Regular eye tests not only help your optometrist identify potential problems with your eyesight before they develop, but also provide a window into your overall health. Your eyes can be an early indication of common health problems like high blood pressure and high cholesterol.

Checking children’s eyesight is particularly important, as up to 80% of what they learn is through sight*. Eye checks can also help prevent conditions like a lazy eye from developing.

How often should I have an eye test?

Even if you can see clearly, it’s recommended that adults have an eye test at least every two years, as your eyes change over time. Regular checks help detect any problems early.

It’s also advisable to book an eye test if you’re experiencing any signs of presbyopia (gradual loss of your eyes’ ability to focus on nearby objects). If you’re holding books or your mobile phone at arm’s length to read, it’s time to book an appointment.

For children, regular eye tests are crucial as their eyes are still growing. They usually get their first check at about one year old and should have regular checks every two years until they’re 16.

What will happen at my eye test?

Before your eye test

Let us know when you’ve arrived, and we’ll check you in. We’ll usually begin with some preliminary checks, such as:

  • Eye pressure check – a puff of air into your eye.
  • Visual field test – monitoring flashing lights across a screen.
  • Digital retinal photograph – creating a permanent record of your eye health.

These checks help identify early signs of conditions like glaucoma.

During your eye test

Once inside the consulting room, you’ll spend up to 30 minutes with your optometrist. They’ll:

  • Check how comfortably you can see near and far.
  • Look for signs of conditions like cataracts.
  • Assess your general health through key signs visible in your eyes.

After your eye test

By the end of your test, we’ll recommend the best options for your vision based on your needs. We’ll provide a personal eyecare recommendation, explaining any glasses or contact lenses required.

If you need glasses, a personal shopper will help you find frames that suit your face shape and style. You’ll also receive a patient pack with your eyecare information to help you feel in control of your eye health.

How long should I expect to be in store?

Expect to spend up to 1 hour 30 minutes in total with your optometrist and the team during your visit. This includes pre-screening, eye examination, and choosing your glasses or contact lenses. Depending on factors like age and eye conditions, the duration may vary.

How much does an eye test at Boots Opticians cost?

A standard eye test costs £25, unless you’re eligible for an NHS eye test. Find out if you meet the criteria for an NHS-funded test here.

Charges apply for a 3D OCT eye scan, providing a detailed dimension to your eye test.

Advanced Eye Test Explained

Let’s add a new dimension to your eye test!

What is it?

An OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography) is an advanced eye scan that helps us understand the different layers of your retina. It only takes a couple of minutes, but it can tell us lots of useful information about your eyes & your overall health. For more information.

What are the benefits?

Did you know that your eyes can be indicators of your overall health? An OCT scan can analyse this in closer detail & can even help detect underlying conditions such as diabetes, age-related macular degeneration & more.

Many eye health conditions are only noticeable when they’re advanced, so by undergoing an OCT scan you can discover conditions early & manage them before they get worse.

Remember: you don’t have to book for this in advance, just ask on the day of your appointment!
